The Art
Kenwood Vineyards’ seventeenth Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon features “Heart and Handkerchief,” a painting by renowned artist, Jim Dine.
Born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim Dine is an artist whose paintings and sculptures can be seen in museums and galleries throughout the world. Since the 1960’s, he has produced his works in series – the Robe, The Venus, The Heart. Dine recently created this work, entitled “The Handkerchief,” using a variety of techniques: etching, woodcut, and hand coloring. It is a wonderful example of the humanism and playfulness that breaks through the surface in his art.
The Wine
Aromas of admirable depth and range feature dense, ripe fruit scents backed by rich oak and suggestions of dried herbs, cinnamon and dark chocolate, equally well-packed on the palate.
The grapes selected for the 1991 Artist Series came from three select Sonoma Valley vineyards, including the mountainous Lindholm Vineyard. Following harvest at optimum ripeness, the separate vineyard lots were fermented in stainless steel and aged in new French oak barrels for two years.
Cabernet Franc and Merlot were then added in the final blend to soften and further enhance the drinkability of this elegant, full-bodied wine. The excellent harvest of 1991 ensures plenty of rich, ripe fruit with tannins to age well into the next century.
Composition: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc
