1994 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon

The Art
It was David Goines reclining nude label that was the first to grace the Artist Series collection with the 1975 vintage.  Known affectionately at the winery as the “Naked Lady” label, Mr. Goines’ first edition of the work was deemed “obscene and indecent” by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

In 1997, the “Naked Lady” was resubmitted to the BATF and approved.  What better way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of one of the world’s most renowned collections of wine!

The Wine
This wine is an elegant, intensely-concentrated wine with vibrant, deep color, and aromas of cedar, vanilla, pepper and cassis, and rich, jammy flavors of blackberry and dark cherry.

The exceptional growing season of 1994 produced some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon fruit Kenwood has ever had the pleasure to work with.  The fruit chosen for the 1994 Artist Series cuvee came from the Lindholm and Montecillo vineyards, both of which are located at an elevation of about 1,400 feet on the Mayacamas mountain range, bordering the eastern side of Sonoma Valley.  Both vineyards are low-yielding, producing less than three tons per acre of intensely-flavored fruit.

After harvesting in late October, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and the lots aged separately in small French oak barrels for 24 months.  Cabernet Franc and Merlot were then added to soften and further enhance the wine.  Subsequently, the final blend of the 1994 Artist Series Cabernet spent an additional six months in French oak.  The wine was further aged for six months in the bottle before being released to the market in the fall of 1998.
