Carneros

Carneros

Carneros is situated on the northernmost edge of the San Francisco Bay and is known as one the coolest Viticultural Areas. The shallow soil and rolling hills which spill over into neighboring Napa and Sonoma counties were once home to shepherds and their flock, hence the name Carneros, a Spanish term for “ram.”

Influenced by the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean with a combination of summer fog, warm days, and a long growing season, the grapes are allowed to mature slowly and evenly, giving the fruit balance as well as richness in its color, flavor and acidity. With over 1,000 acres of vines planted, the dominant varietals grown in Carneros are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with about one-third of these finding their way into sparkling wines. Carneros’ Pinots are admired for their crisp, tight structure with spicy berry flavors; the Chardonnays are typically crisp and lively, with notes of lemon and pineapple.
