Chalk Hill
Settled in the northeast corner of the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill is named for its volcanically-derived, chalky, white ash soil. These mildly fertile soils lend themselves to the production of exceptional whites, particularly Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot also do well in this appellation. The Sauvignon Blancs of Chalk Hill reveal mineral-filled, tangy fresh-grass flavors; the Chardonnays show power and substance, and the Cabernet Sauvignons give off hints of black currants and cassis.
With over 1,000 acres planted, Chalk Hill enjoys a warmer climate compared to the rest of the Russian River Valley. Due to the higher elevation, these vineyards escape most of the cooling fog that often blankets the lower-lying growing areas near the river.
