The Barn Pinot Noir 2016
Our 2016 Pinot Noir wine was sourced from select blocks of the Amaral Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast appellation. We chose this vineyard because of the ideal location close to the San Pablo Bay and the clonal selection, Dijon clone 777. This makes the perfect combination for the highest quality Pinot Noir grapes. The vineyard is farmed with meticulous attention to detail including fruit thinning, leaf pulling and shoot positioning. Extra passes through the vineyard were made prior to harvest to minimize inferior grape clusters and hand sorting was done at harvest to ensure only the best grape clusters were chosen for this wine.
The growing season of 2016 was notable for being pleasant and mild which gave our Pinot Noir grapes extended hang time and flavor maturation. The wine was made in small batches with minimal intervention and traditional winemaking techniques to preserve the pure expression of the terroir. The grapes were optically sorted at the winery, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and pressed with a basket press before being gently racked into new French oak barrels where the wine aged for 17 months. It was then racked to neutral oak, allowing the wine to perfectly mature. The final wine was hand bottled in August 2018. The wine opens with aromas of cherry, plum and raspberry with elegant undertones of graham cracker pie crust and toasty oak. The palate is rich and lush with expressive flavors of marionberry preserve and crushed strawberries while hints of allspice, clove and cardamom add complexity and depth. The tannins are fine grained, leading to a long and silky finish.
